THE KABALUTAN MARKET

JANUARY 2008
An open air market was inaugurated which was built by our people from W.D.R. for the Baju people who live in the distant village called Kabalutan.
In the initial years these fishermen were badly paid for illegal fishing using bombs because of their experience with the sea.
Even though their fishing zone, fortunately, did not include Walea, we first clashed a number of times. However, in time and due to mutual understanding, we discussed the matter trying to establish a dialogue.
Thanks to the relationship which has developed between us over the years in our attempt to make them understand the damage they were doing to their sea and to themselves, and the far-sighted Village chief who did all he could to change his people’s attitudes, we financed and built the market’s structure, so as to give them the means to increase the “legal” economy based on commerce and the exchange of manufactures and local products with traders that reach the remote areas by public boats, bringing with them all kinds of products from the coast.
In this way the Baju have the means to survive without having to risk their lives or jail sentences for illegal fishing.
In the days in which the market is not present the space is used for volley ball and football tournaments and other activities.
We will soon be inaugurating two projects financed and built together with the locals: a kindergarten in Pasokan and a medical ambulatory in Kondongan. We’ll keep you informed!
