“More than once I have tried to understand and logically put my finger on what pushed a person like myself, in the past so urban, worldly and nocturnal, to give up everything and dedicate my life to this paradise at the ends of the earth.
And I have seen the same consternation in the look of guests who are now as good as friends and who, despite the distance, still continue to return to Walea....
People that live here, or those who have come back, or have dearly wished to do so, have difficulty explaining to others who have not seen Walea why this place remains a part of you and what it is that makes this Point of Tanjung Kramat so different from other wonderful destinations.
It is probably an impossible task, and Walea obviously does not have this effect on everyone... I believe that it is a question closely linked to the idea of “travel”, rather than to the idea of a “holiday”.
For me, the passion was instant. Arriving in a small boat on a sunny day after weeks of aimless exploring, I remember the still and very clear water that seemed like floating in an enormous aquarium... and then stepping onto land, on the white beach and that wall of green that was the forest when we arrived... it was like seeing something so beautiful for the first time and at the same time feeling that I had always lived there...
The silence, the smell, the light and the lightness of the air... I often say that the village was built exactly as in the “vision” that we had the first time that we set foot here, even if I must say that over the years, once the challenge of bringing travellers here from the all over the world had been won, everything improved, from the arrival area to the facilities ashore and the transport.

I will not be able to thank Luca enough, who in his obstinacy never gave up during his long solitary search all over Asia looking for his dream; in doing so, he gave me the opportunity to live this unique, one-off experience and to understand that “home” is where the heart and mind join to achieve the goal of life itself, which we recognise when, with what we are doing, we give ourselves and others the most valuable gift, a few moments of happiness.”
